How do the Fan Capacitor work?
The most common motor used in a normal household electric fan is a single-phase induction motor. When first switched on such a motor needs to use a “starter” winding, in addition to its main winding, so that a rotating magnetic field is created to make the motor’s rotor start to turn.
However a starter winding cannot do the job on its own, it needs a “Start-And-Run Capacitor” in series with the starter winding to create a rotating magnetic field. Without one of those capacitors the motor would never start to turn. Most ceiling fans use a type of motor known as a “permanent split capacitor motor“. These motors have two coils, a “start” and a “run” winding. A capacitor is connected in series with the start winding to insert a phase shift, but once the motor is up to speed it becomes an auxiliary winding. In order to reverse the motor, the Fan Capacitor is applied to the “run” winding which then becomes the “start” winding. In some cases the windings may have taps to provide different speeds, in others the value of the start/run capacitor is lowered to provide lower speeds. Yet other designs will have additional capacitors wired in series with the motor as a whole to regulate speeds.

How do the Motor Start Capacitor work?
A start capacitor is used to briefly shift phase on a start winding in a single phase electric motor to create an increase increase in torque. Start capacitors possess a very large capacitance value for their size and voltage rating, and as a result, are only intended for intermittent duty. It is because of this that start capacitors fail after being left energized too long due to a faulty starting circuit on a motor.
Why my Motor Start Capacitor have a resistor?
Most replacement start capacitors will not include a resistor. You can check the condition of the old one by checking the resistance value, or just replace it with a new one. This should read somewhere around 10-20k Ohms and around 2 watts. The resistors are usually either soldered or crimped to the terminals. The purpose of the resistor is to bleed off residual voltage in the capacitor after it has been disconnected from the circuit after start up of the motor. Not all start capacitors will use one, as there are other ways to accomplish this. The important thing to note is that if your original capacitor had one, you’ll need to replace it on the new capacitor.

Air Conditioner Capacitor is a capacitor used for both the compressor and the fan in an air conditioning system. For smaller systems, these motors are both single phase. For larger systems, they may use a three phase compressor and a single phase fan, or even both a three phase compressor and fan.

A single unit run capacitor is used to continuously adjust current or phase shift to a motor’s windings in an effort to optimise the motor’s torque and efficiency performance. All run capacitors are designed for continuous duty, and as a result, have a much lower failure rate than start capacitors. A single unit Air Conditioner Capacitor will have 2 connections and will be dedicated to optimising current on one motor.
Dual run air conditioning capacitors are 2 run capacitors in one case. They have nothing else that makes them electrically special. They generally have connections marked “C” for “common”, “H” or “Herm” for “Hermetic Compressor,” and “F” for “Fan.” They will also have 2 different capacitor ratings for the 2 different parts. You might see 40/5 MFD, meaning that one side is 40 microfarads (measurement of capacitance), and the other side is 5 microfarads. The smaller value will always be connected to the fan. The larger connection will always be connected to the compressor.
The dual run air conditioning capacitor design’s only advantage is that it comes in a small package with only 3 connections. There is no other difference. In a pinch and even as a permanent solution, if there is enough space for mounting, using two separate run capacitors in place of your original dual run motor capacitor is an acceptable practice.
